Safe abortions are performed by qualified doctors in full time medical practices
When seeking abortion care, women should always ask the facility directly when making an appointment if they provide full time abortion services and if the doctor works in the medical practice full time. Women have a right to know that abortion providers are not all the same. There are part time abortion providers who provide limited access for abortion services and full time abortion practices who have full time doctors and full time access for women seeking care. The full time practices have a regular doctor working every day providing medical procedures and abortion options every day. This provides women with a reliable, safe and immediate care facility for women’s reproductive services. This is modern, safe women’s care and modern medicine. This is what every patient should expect and what every women deserves. Medical care should be available every day and a doctor, not just a nurse who is not qualified or licensed in Florida to provide unsupervised surgical services, must be available in abortion practices as women may have additional needs and patients need to know that they have a safe place to immediately seek this care if needed.
Women also have the absolute right to know who the doctor is providing surgical care and what their training and experience level is. As the surgical abortion is a gynecologic procedure, it is important that doctor is trained in gynecology and highly experienced. There is definitely never a reason to be told by an abortion provider that there is a delay in the ability to make an appointment for an abortion procedure, as it is well known that care for abortion procedures in full time facilities will always be immediately available and the full time doctors will always get patients in immediately, often even the same day. If a facility only has a part time doctor, and states they are “booked up” for days or even sometimes weeks, this is simply an unfortunate indication that a part time facility may not actually have a required doctor available, and this also may indicate a facility does not have a full time on-site physician on staff. If a facility tells you they don’t have immediate availability for a pregnancy termination, which is well recognized these days as highly time sensitive and considered an urgent medical care need, realize that it is essential to be seen to confirm the gestational date of the pregnancy immediately, to avoid losing to option of obtaining care due to any unnecessary delay. For safety, there should never be more than a one day wait to get a time sensitive pregnancy termination without confirming the gestational date of the pregnancy. Doctors are the only ones who can perform abortions and surgery in Florida. Be safe, always ask the right questions, and always seek qualified, experienced care.
Significant increase in need for surgery if medical abortion is started after 8 weeks
The risk factors for surgical intervention of early medical abortion was recently studied and published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Meaidi et al., May 2019). The researchers have concluded that if patients are given the medical abortion pill regimen after 8 weeks, the risks are a significant 3 times higher that a abortion pill failure or incomplete process will occur resulting in the need for additional surgical invention.
As Florida Women’s Center is well known for always providing the safest and most appropriate care and medical advice to women seeking abortion services, and as patient safety is our highest and proven priority, we want patients to be fully informed. If women chose to seek the abortion pill from a facility that provides it at this increased risk times greater than 8 weeks, we want patients to be fully informed and recognize the significantly greater risk of failure or an incomplete process that could result in increased unacceptable bleeding and the need for emergent surgical intervention. Always ask your doctor to fully explain the true risks of the abortion pill if you seek it after 8 weeks and fully explain the options and availability any needed surgery when making appointments, for your safety.
Florida Supreme Court blocks 24 hour abortion waiting period.
Recent legislation attempting to burden and require women to wait an additional 24 hours after being seen by their doctor before being able to obtain an abortion procedure has again blocked by the Florida Courts. This time, the highest Court in the State, the Florida Supreme Court, has again blocked this burdensome new law from going into effect while they determine if the law violates the constitutional rights of women in Florida. Reflecting the good common sense and respect for women the Florida Supreme Court is known for, this is excellent news for women as they now again can make a private and personal medical decision without governmental interference and obtain an abortion procedure in a timely manner when they seek private medical care from a their medical doctor.
