Florida 15 week abortion ban in effect – Yes, but put your mind at ease. We will see you immediately.
Florida has recently passed a new law which was signed by Governor DeSantis that governs and further restrict the abortion options for women. This new law went into effect on July 1, 2022 and is currently still in effect even after a Circuit Court Judge blocked it as unconstitutional because the State of Florida appealed this decision, which resulted in putting this law back in effect. As a licensed medical office, we must comply with all Florida laws. This law also affected the way doctors are required to calculate the gestational age of pregnancies when determining if a pregnancy is either 1st or 2nd trimester, causing additional barriers to women seeking early abortions. Due to this new law imposed by Florida, a 1st trimester is now calculated from the estimated LMP instead of the actual time of fertilization, meaning the time of conception. What this means is that now the 1st trimester is deemed completed by the State of Florida after 11.6 weeks from an estimated time of a woman’s last menstrual cycle, instead the previous 11.6 weeks after actual fertilization and the true beginning of a pregnancy, which is usually about 2 weeks after the LMP when a woman ovulates.
